How to design a good acrylic aquarium

Although polyethylene, polypropylene, acrylic and fluorocarbon plastics are usually non-toxic, the safest basic material may be glass. Glass fiber has been widely used. If properly prepared, it is not toxic. Adhesives for sealing include epoxy resin, polyvinyl chloride, silicone rubber (except for some color products), and neoprene. Metals are usually not used, especially in seawater, which is highly corrosive. However, stainless steel is often used because of its low toxicity, especially in fresh water plants.

The small water tank may be made of glass, and the supporting frame with silicone rubber as adhesive is not required. In addition to the largest water tank, the most practical supporting material for all kinds of water tanks may be glass fiber. It is light and strong, does not deteriorate, and can be easily processed into any shape. Although wood is widely used, it is perishable and moth eaten and must be protected. Reinforced concrete, including specially prepared mixtures for use in seawater, is the main supporting material used in the construction of large aquariums.

In modern aquariums, tanks of different sizes and shapes are often put together to avoid the "fish box" appearance of some older formal aquariums. The three-dimensional scenery behind the water tank creates the illusion of distance; The location of the water tank may be a natural environment, or it may be filled or coated with glass fiber to imitate all environments. The modern aquarium attempts to show the natural living environment of the various fish on display.

Polished flat glass, tempered polished flat glass and plexiglass are common transparent materials. Polished flat glass is usually used only in small aquariums because it breaks into large pieces when it becomes weak. The general practice is to equip large water tanks with 2 ~ 3 layers of tempered glass. Even if it is broken, it is limited to one layer of glass. Plexiglass is easy to scratch, but it can be polished again.

The auxiliary equipment of the water tank usually includes filter, air pump, light, electronic thermostatically controlled immersion heater or other cooling devices. In an aquarium, water tanks are usually placed together, so there can be common filters and temperature controls. It may also include a sterilizer for water. In large aquariums with multiple systems, indoor water supply and drainage facilities are sometimes very complex, involving various automatic control devices and water quality monitoring systems. Glass pipe fittings (for example, the pipe fittings used to inflate and circulate water in the aquarium) are expensive and fragile, so they are only used when low toxicity must be guaranteed. The widely used are non increased PVC pipes. Sometimes glass fiber pipes and asbestos pipes lined with epoxy resin are also used, but the lead pipes and hard rubber pipes have been abandoned. Mussels and barnacles will grow in the pipes using seawater, resulting in siltation For plugged organisms, if two sets of pipes are used and one set is used every other week, the growth of these organisms can be avoided. After the pipe is dry, a few organisms in the pipe will die. When the pipe is used again, these organisms will be washed out.
